The Four of Cups card talks about refusal, stubbornness, having zero motivation, feeling generally discouraged and feeling as though there is just no solution present.
The Four of Cups has different meanings when interpreted upright as it does reversed (upside down, not the same as face down).
The table below shows a brief summary of interpretations, followed by more in-depth analysis of the card in both positions below.
Upright | Reversed |
Nothing makes one happy. Stubborn. Apathy. Unmotivated. | Desire for a new start. |
(Yes/No?): No | (Yes/No?): Yes |
The Four of Cups is a card about being stubborn and unable to see the silver lining.
This can be to the point of refusing to even consider positive outcomes or ways to move forward.
It is a card representative of "pouting" or being extremely unmotivated.
When drawn in the reverse, the Four of Cups can be an indication of coming out of the before mentioned energies.
Number 4 Meaning
In numerology, the number 4 represents expansion and development.
The number 4 is a feminine number.
Just like how it takes four walls to build a house, or four tires to ground a car, fours are associated with strong foundations and stability.
The number four has strong connotations to order and organization.
Four of Cups description
In the original Rider-Waite tarot deck, the Four of Cups depicts a man sitting under a tree with his arms crossed.
He is cross legged and appears disappointed, if not annoyed.
There are three golden cups at his feet, which he does not appear interested in.
There is a single cup, emerging from a small cloud, being handed towards him, however he remains with his arms crossed in refusal towards this cup.
There are many different versions of this card in many different decks today, so always pay close attention to the imagery when interpreting the card.
